I remember in my early 20s watching every episode of Man vs Wild one summer. What stayed with me most was how positive, calm, centered, and at peace you were at night, even when everything around you was the opposite.

The way you spoke about your family and your faith really stuck with me. That sense of calm was something I thought about long after the seasons ended.

Amen.

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

If we want to realise our true purpose we must first submit to the Lord and he will show us the way we should go.

There is a yearning, a God given desire to use our skills in the best way possible.

Some of us find our calling early in life but some of us will need to listen more to the Lord’s leading.

He says that we should trust Him and He will give us our hearts desires - our God given purpose.

When we bought our house, my stepdad advised me to dig up the holly bushes because they were planted close to our house. Cutting them down was easy, but digging them up was hard. Their root system was essentially a giant hand with fingers that grew out. Those roots then got intertwined with each other. That support system was great. As believers, we grow our roots deep in the Word then interlock those roots with other believers. What a firm foundation!

True. We are at the centre Spiritual beings. Not just meat, bone and sinews with the ability to think. Spiritual! Neglect the core and the extremities suffer and fail. Evident in the way our lives, health tend to collapse when we lose sight of the true target, Spirituality and growth , Faith! Always enjoyed your program, insights and of course your balls to wall sense of adventure. I used to live in the mountains, hiked a lot, alone into high alpine tundra to fish for trout. I’ve never felt closer to God than alone is his cathedral, storm clouds rolling over the tops of the mountains. Fresh cat tracks in the bit of snow. Ran into a grizzly hiking out in the dark one night. No bear spray, no flashlight. A hair raising event. I could hear a cricket pass gas at 50 metres the 4 miles back to my vehicle. 😂 Yes it was foolish but It also is in those moments one truly feels Alive! Glad to have found your article on the Stack!

Just found your Substack and I enjoying it. Your evocative way of storytelling shows us instead of describes and I am enjoying it. I feel a kinship with it and the 100-word stories I post on my Substack. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Yes this makes sense. We be steady not just for ourselves but fir others. We become like the oak tree ,a shelter for others, rather than a palm tree blown almost horizontal by the desert storms. Dave.

I didn’t know about your faith, so thank you for sharing this. While the church isn’t for me personally, I really respect how faith gives so many people purpose, strength, and hope.

Amen!! You have no idea how much joy filled me when I read through this post. So glad to be able to call you my brother in Christ!

To me purpose has to have these elements, has to be equally interesting, exciting, important and fulfilling.

If all 4 are present, it works.

If one is missing, thing fall apart.

That strong foundation is essential. Remain in the Vine.

“He has told you, O man, what is good;

And what does the Lord require of you

But to do justice, to love kindness,

And to walk humbly with your God?”

If we die to ourselves, to the world, we are alive in Christ! Nothing else could give me such hope and purpose. Thank you for being a consistent light in such a dark and unsteady world.

You are more likely to sustain effort when the life you are building actually feels like yours.
